Worldwide High 360 Million North American LTE Connections

Global 4G LTE connections soared 81% year-over-year (YoY) in 3Q 2016, according to data from 5G Americas released last week. North American LTE connections reached 360 million, researchers said.

4G LTE penetration and mobile wireless market share were highest in North America (U.S. and Canada) at 79%. By comparison, penetration of 4G LTE connections in Western Europe rose to 43%, while that for Oceania, Eastern and Southeastern Asia reached 41%.

Latin America-Caribbean posted the highest rate of growth for 3Q as 5G and 4G LTE connections jumped 154% with the addition of 59.4 million, 5G Americas highlights.

“LTE continues its tremendous uptake by customers in North America as subscribers reap the benefits of fast data speeds and ‘everywhere connectivity’ as wireless carriers deploy new LTE-Advanced features,” Chris Pearson, 5G Americas president, was quoted in a news release.

North American LTE Connections
For North America, 5G Americas highlights the following:

  • 282 million LTE connections for a net gain of 63 million new LTE customers in the last 12 months and a 29 percent growth rate;
  • LTE is forecast to reach 394 million connections at the end of 2020 (forecast does not include M2M) or a 92 percent share of the market;
  • 1 million 5G connections forecast in 2020 – nearly 50 percent of global 5G connections followed by Oceania, Eastern and Southeastern Asia with 28 percent and Eastern Europe with nearly 19 percent.

3Q 2016 – Global LTE & LTE-Advanced:

  • 1.7 billion LTE connections out of a total of 7.5 billion total cellular connections worldwide;
  • 752 million new LTE subscriptions year-over-year;
  • 81 percent growth in LTE connections, which are forecast to reach 4.3 billion by year-end 2021 (forecast does not include M2M). LTE global market share forecast to reach 52 percent by 2021.
